Building Material Quantities for House Construction

Raw materials required for building constructions are of two different categories - natural and synthetic. We all are aware that up to 60% of the total construction cost is of building materials. While constructing a house, understanding and analysing the quality parameters of the materials is necessary.

It is primary to have a clear idea to estimate the costing and quantity factors of the materials to get the best outcome. The estimation of the materials for construction depends on the Build-up Area. Depending on the contractors or builders, estimation quotes may vary. Here, we are providing a standard approximation of raw materials for 1000 sqft house.

Cement

Cement plays a most significant role in the construction. It is required in preparing concrete for RCC structure, in brick masonry works, and for plastering the walls. Quality cement works well when blended with the right amount of water, sand and aggregates.

The cement is available in different grade types - PPC or PSC are used for masonry and finishing purposes, whereas OPC is generally preferred for concrete works.

Cement

Of the total material cost, cement required is up to 16%. Around 0.4 cement bag is used per sqft of construction that makes a total of 400 cement bags of 50 kg each is consumed for 1000 sqft house.

Sand

Sand is mainly used for preparing RCC, mortar, plaster, filling and flooring too. Sand should be well-graded and free from the slit or any organic matter.

M Sand for plastering

Of the total material cost, the sand contribution is up to 12%. Around 1.8 cubic ft per sqft that makes a total of 1800 cubic ft for 1000 sqft.

Aggregates

Coarse aggregates are generally used for making concrete mixing with sand, cement and water. They should be clean and dense to increase the strength of the concrete.

Aggregates for RCC

About 1.35 cubic ft is used per sqft that makes a total of 1350 cubic ft for 1000 sqft. The contribution of aggregates is up to 8% of the total material cost.

TMT Steel Bars

TMT Steel Bars are the most crucial structural components used in the reinforcement cement concrete. They are available in different grades, most commonly used among them is Fe-500 grade type.

TMT Bars for Reinforcement

TMT bars consumption per sqft built-up area is 2.1 kg per sqft that makes a total of 2100 kgs of TMT bars per 1000 sqft. The overall contribution of Steel of the total material cost is about 24%.

Bricks or Blocks

Bricks or Blocks are used for masonry construction. The most common brick size used for 9-inch wall construction is 9x4x3 inch. The bricks or blocks used should be of uniform colour, size and with sharp straight edges.

Red bricks for Masonry Construction

For 1000 sqft, we require a minimum of 25000 to 34000 bricks. Of the total material cost, the bricks or blocks contribute up to 5%.

Paints & Finishes

Unlike other materials, painting of walls brings colour to the house. Paints used for construction are of two types- interior paints and exterior paints. Paints should be water-proof, durable and highly resistant to climatic conditions.

Exterior paints for walls

The internal and external consumption of paints for walls per sqft built-up area is 0.14 litres and 0.04 litres. Paints contribution is up to 4% of the total material cost.

Tiles

Vitrified tiles are most commonly used tiles for flooring. They are of high strength and water-absorbent ceramic tiles for flooring. Other than the tiles, one can go for marble and granite flooring.

Tiles for Flooring

Of the total material cost, tiles consumption is up to 8%. If the tiles are 2ft x 2ft, then the minimum number of tiles required is 80-100.

Other Materials

The materials include plumbing items, electrical items, wooden products like doors and windows, and bathroom accessories. The overall material cost can be of 23%. The requirements of these materials may vary from person to person's choice.

The details mentioned above are just estimation or approximations of the total materials cost and quantities required constructing a 1000 sqft house. The material cost and amount may vary depending upon the quality, location and brand. These tips may help you to get the best ideas of how to buy the material without any wastage.
